Ingredients

  • 2 cups frozen pineapple chunks do not thaw
  • 1 ripe banana fresh or frozen, broken into pieces
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper freshly ground or pre-ground, helps turmeric absorb
  • 1 cup coconut water plain, no added sugar
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt whole milk or 2 percent; use coconut yogurt for dairy-free
  • 1 tsp honey optional, only if your pineapple is very tart

Equipment

  • high-speed blender

Method

  1. Before you open the turmeric, put on an apron or old shirt. Turmeric stains fabric and countertops fast. Keep a damp cloth nearby and wipe up any spills right away.
  2. Add the coconut water and yogurt to the blender first. Putting liquid in first helps the blades catch the frozen fruit more easily and protects your blender motor.
  3. Add the frozen pineapple chunks, banana pieces, ground turmeric, and black pepper on top of the liquid.
  4. Blend on high for 45 to 60 seconds until the mixture is completely smooth and no chunks remain. Stop and scrape down the sides with a spatula if needed, then blend for another 15 seconds.
  5. Taste the smoothie. If your pineapple was very tart, add the optional honey and blend for 5 more seconds. If it is too thick for your liking, add a splash more coconut water and blend again briefly.
  6. Pour into two glasses and serve immediately. The vibrant golden color fades slightly if it sits, so drink it fresh for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

Frozen pineapple gives this smoothie its thick, cold texture without watering it down with ice. The black pepper is not optional for nutrition reasons but you truly will not taste it at all in the finished drink.
