Method
- Rinse the apple under cool running water and dry it with a towel. Place it on a cutting board and cut it in half from top to bottom through the core.
- Lay each apple half flat and slice out the core and seeds with a small angled cut on each side. Discard the core. Slice each half into pieces about a quarter inch thick. Thinner slices are better for little kids, while older kids can handle thicker wedges.
- Place all the apple slices in a small zip bag or container. Drizzle the lemon juice over them, seal the bag, and shake or toss gently for about five seconds so every cut surface gets a light coating. This is the step that prevents browning, so do not skip it.
- Measure the sunflower seed butter into a small dipping container with a tight-fitting lid. If you are adding salt or honey, stir them in now until fully combined. Wipe the rim of the container clean before putting the lid on so it seals properly.
- Pack the apple slices and the sealed dipping container together in a lunchbox. They do not need an ice pack for a typical school morning, but if your child has a long day or the lunchbox gets warm, tuck in a small ice pack to keep the apple slices crisp.
Notes
If your child does not like the slight tang from lemon juice, try cold water with a tiny pinch of salt instead. It slows browning almost as well and leaves no noticeable flavor on the apple.
