Method
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan with cooking spray or a thin layer of butter.
- Pour both cans of apple pie filling into the greased pan and spread them into an even layer. Drizzle the caramel sauce evenly over the top of the apples. Sprinkle the cinnamon over the caramel layer if you are using it.
- Open the dry cake mix and sprinkle it in an even layer over the top of the apple and caramel. Do not stir anything. Spread the cake mix gently with your hand or a spoon so there are no thick clumps and the apple filling is covered.
- Lay the cold butter pats in a single layer across the top of the dry cake mix. Space them about 1 to 2 inches apart so they cover the surface as evenly as possible. Good coverage is what gives you a golden, crumbly top rather than dry white patches.
- Bake uncovered for 45 to 50 minutes. The top should be deep golden brown and the edges should be bubbling up through the crust. If you see dry white spots, those areas did not get enough butter coverage but will still taste good, just not as crisp.
- Remove from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before serving. Spoon it into bowls and serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
Notes
Spice cake mix is an easy swap for yellow and adds more cinnamon and clove flavor to every bite. If you want extra caramel flavor, drizzle a little more sauce over each serving right before you bring it to the table.
